Our Volunteers

What is involved

The Hamish Saunders Memorial Trust flies two selected volunteers to Tasmania each year, so they can participate in a flora and fauna survey of a selected island environment. The trips offer young New Zealanders an opportunity to spend time in some of Australia's most beautiful coastline environments, contributing to the conservation of these areas.

Each trip lasts for a week to ten days and is usually scheduled for the spring months of October to December.

Applying

Applications are sought from interested and motivated kiwis and aussies who believe they would benefit from taking part in one of our island surveys. Successful applicants will have the following attributes:

  • Have a strong interest in coastal conservation.
  • Be a Post graduate, or near graduation student.
  • Keen to learn and to gain field experience.
  • Willing and able to live in a remote environment with only basic amenities.
  • A "team player".
  • A strong swimmer.

Apply now for the January 2017 survey trip. Details can be found here

Volunteer Feedback

Want to find out what past volunteers thought of their HSMT Survey experiences?

As part of the island survey reports, our kiwi participants have kindly given us feedback on their experiences. Each gives their own unique perspective on the area they travelled to, the team they worked with and the plant and animal surveying activities they took part in.
